Ok, so it wasn’t bloody (though I did smack my chin on the pullup bar) we continued “Ladies Week” at Crossfit 403 last night and it was Mary’s turn.
When I looked through the named WOD’s earlier this week, this is one of the workouts I was kind of hoping we wouldn’t have to do. It’s a 20 minutes AMRAP (see glossary!) with 1 round being:
5 handstand pushups
I can do modified handstand pushups where I put my knees on a bench and invert myself or simply by bending over at the waist and doing them like that, I can do pullups with a band or jumping pullups as I did last night. Pistols though, I dislike pistols. They are one legged squats—one leg straight out in front, one leg squatting, so your legs are in the shape of a pistol. These are super awkward for me and I dislike that I can’t get a real deep squat. It’s something to work on, but I don’t like it…enough whining…
We got through the warmup and basically went straight into the WOD. Because there were several people in the pullup area using rings to support themselves for the pistols, I decided to share a spot with Chris (who is the same height) for jumping pullups. Truth be told I would have preferred to do kipping pullups with a band but there just wasn’t quite enough room with everyone “inside the cage” as I call it. If I had done kipping pullups, I’m fairly certain I would have kicked someone in the head so I avoided that scenario. All in all though, a good 20 minutes. I started with pullups so my rounds were:
At the end of 20 minutes, I was able to complete 10 full rounds, plus 15 pullups. Not a bad outing at all, pretty good in fact but I think this is one I’m going to try on my own sometime. Do more aggressive HSPU’s and kipping pullups with a band, just to see how I do. I don’t like leaving the gym feeling like I could have put more into it, it’s a horrible, dejecting feeling.
To finish with a video, here’s a guy who’s amazingly good at pistol squats:
